New York Session: Trading the World's Most Volatile Window
By Forexiz Team
If the London session sets the direction, the New York session decides whether it sticks. The NY session (12:00–21:00 UTC) accounts for roughly 17% of daily forex volume — but the real action is in the first 3 hours, when London and New York overlap.
Why the London–New York Overlap Matters
From 12:00 to 16:00 UTC, both London and New York are trading simultaneously. This is the most liquid window in the 24-hour forex cycle. Spreads are at their tightest, institutional flow is at its heaviest, and most major US economic data is released during this window.
- EUR/USD sees its highest volume during this overlap.
- US data releases (NFP, CPI, retail sales) drop at 12:30 or 13:00 UTC.
- London traders are closing positions, creating counter-trend moves.
- New York traders are entering fresh positions, creating momentum.
The NY Session Open Strategy
Similar to the London open breakout, the NY open strategy capitalises on the momentum that builds as US institutional traders enter the market.
Setup
- Mark the price range from the last 2 hours of the London session (10:00–12:00 UTC).
- At 12:00–12:30 UTC, watch for a directional breakout from this range.
- If price breaks above the range: buy. If it breaks below: sell.
- Stop Loss: 10–15 pips inside the range (below the break for longs, above for shorts).
- Take Profit: 1.5× to 2× the range height.
Be careful around 12:30 UTC — this is when most US data is released. If a major release is scheduled, wait for the data before entering. Trading into a data release is gambling.
The Power Hour (19:00–20:00 UTC)
The last hour of the equity trading day often produces sharp moves in index-correlated pairs. S&P 500 and Nasdaq moves during the equity close can spill over into USD pairs. If you're trading US indices on Forexiz, this window is when institutional portfolio rebalancing creates clean momentum moves.
Best Instruments for the NY Session
- EUR/USD — Most liquid, tightest spreads during overlap.
- GBP/USD — Active during both London and NY, large moves.
- USD/JPY — Sensitive to US data, often trends during NY.
- Gold (XAU/USD) — Reacts strongly to USD-moving data.
- S&P 500 / Nasdaq 100 — Pure NY session instruments.
- Bitcoin — 24/7 but sees increased volume during US hours.
Risk Management During NY
The NY session is more volatile than the Asian session and comparable to London. Key rules:
- Always have a Stop Loss — NY moves are fast and don't give you time to react manually.
- Reduce position sizes before major US data releases.
- Don't trade into the close (after 20:00 UTC) — liquidity drops and spreads widen.
- If you've had a bad London session, don't "make it back" in NY. The daily loss limit applies to the full day.
